SENTEE DE SORT
Lake Como

The Sentee de Sort trail is a wooded, mid-hill path that connects Rovenna (a hamlet of Cernobbio) to Moltrasio, offering incredible views of Lake Como

This is a fairly easy trail, but one that requires a bit of attention in some places, as there are some exposed sections that are, however, easily overcome thanks to the chains you can hold on to. For this reason it is a trail not recommended for those who suffer from vertigo.

❗ If you are in the Como or Cernobbio area and looking for something different to do, you might consider doing this route and ending with a nice aperitif at one of the bars in Moltrasio.

Sentee de Sort

This easy route starts from Rovenna (in the upper part of Cernobbio) and reaches Moltrasio along the only possible route through the forest.

✨ Highlights

1. Numerous beautiful viewpoints of Lake Como and Torno

2. Niasc's stone quarries. Along the way you will come across the Niasc quarries where Moltrasio stone was quarried in the past, much used throughout the area for the construction of flooring, roofs, stairs, tabletops and more.

📍 Facilities
Bars and restaurants

There are no bars or restaurants along the wooded stretch, but several can be found near the bus stop in Cernobbio, in the small square in Rovenna, and in the historic center of Moltrasio.

🥾 Trail description

From Piazza Mazzini in Cernobbio, Rovenna can be reached in about a quarter of an hour by bus C28 or by a 40-minute walk (which I do not recommend, as it is nothing special).

If you are in Como, be aware that the bus also passes by Piazza Cavour and Villa Olmo. Tickets can be purchased at many tobacconists or newsstands, or directly on the bus for a slight surcharge.

Once you reach the starting point, located near the Rovenna cemetery, all you have to do is continue along the wooded path for about half an hour.

During this route you will enjoy incredible views of Lake Como and the village of Torno located on the opposite shore.

You will also pass through stone quarries that have been used extensively for the construction of floors, roofs, stairs and more throughout the local area.

Coming out of the woods, you meet the first houses of Casarico, a hamlet of Moltrasio. Continuing along a steep but short flight of steps you reach the hamlet of Moltrasio where you can refresh yourself before returning.

Moltrasio is crossed by the state road where you can take the C10 bus to many destinations on the western branch of Lake Como.

VAL SANAGRA
Lake Como

Val Sanagra, also known as Val Senagra, is a vast area rich in flora, fauna and ancient rural settlements included between the municipalities of Menaggio and Grandola ed Uniti.

It takes its name from the stream that flows through the valley and creates beautiful waterfalls often topped by fascinating Romanesque stone bridges.

❗ Val Sanagra is an ideal place to retreat on hot summer days, sheltered from the crowds that characterize Lake Como‘s most popular destinations in high season. In fact, in addition to offering trails suitable for most people, the valley is also home to a farmhouse where you can taste local products or stay overnight, and an eco-museum for a different kind of day out.

Learn all about Val Sanagra and follow my own steps with the GPS routes I recorded on the Komoot app (available for iOS and Android)!

1. Val Sanagra | From Menaggio to La Vecchia Chioderia farmhouse

This very easy and mostly flat route starts from the highest part of Menaggio and reaches La Vecchia Chioderia, a farmhouse specializing in trout farming, a typical activity of the area.

✨ Highlights

1. Ponte Nogara, a beautiful Romanesque stone bridge over the Sanagra stream.

2. Fornace Galli, an old brick factory part of the ecomuseum of Val Sanagra (whose headquarters is about a 10-minute walk from the end of this route). The kiln is an example of industrial archaeology: inside is a firing kiln and the equipment needed to process clay using the motive power of water. The kiln was a notable center of production, so much so that many buildings in neighboring areas - and even further afield - exploited the bricks produced in Val Sanagra. The building can be visited from May to the end of September every second and last Sunday of the month (10 am-12:30 pm, 2-5:30 pm). For groups, possibility of visit by reservation.

📍 Facilities
Bars and restaurants

Agriturismo La Vecchia Chioderia, an old nail factory now converted to trout farming and agritourism. The restaurant offers many trout specialties (pasta with trout, smoked trout, pickled trout, etc.) and many rustic-style rooms where you can stay overnight.

🥾 Trail description

The trail begins near the Loveno cemetery in the upper part of Menaggio. From the center of Menaggio you can get there in two ways:

  • by bus C13 (which passes by the main road through Menaggio) from which you will have to get off at the stop "Loveno Superiore - Cappella del Sasso" (see directions); from here, with a walk of about 15-20 minutes you will reach the beginning of the trail passing through the charming hamlet of Loveno
  • with a walk of about 30 minutes on a steadily ascending paved road.

Start the trail in the locality of Piamuro and continue straight along the only available path. After 10-20 minutes of walking you will have the opportunity to take a small detour to the right to reach a nice viewpoint over Cardano, a hamlet of Grandola ed Uniti.

Back on the main path, a short climb begins until reaching the Cappella Artus, located right on the border between Grandola ed Uniti and Menaggio. At this point the road descends until it meets the Sanagra stream, overlooked by the splendid Ponte Nogara.

Stay on the main trail, leaving the bridge on the left, and follow the stream along the beautiful path through the trees. After a few minutes you will meet the Fornace Galli on the right (see Highlights) and finally find La Vecchia Chioderia farmhouse in front of you, where you can take a short break before resuming your walk.

2. Val Sanagra | From La Vecchia Chioderia farmhouse to Sass Corbée

This route, even wilder than the previous one, connects the farmhouse to Sass Corbée, a giant boulder that closes the narrow canyon carved by the stream.

✨ Highlights

Sass Corbée, a huge monolith that closes the narrow canyon carved by the stream. It is a place worth visiting and allows you to appreciate the magnificence of nature and the incessant flow of the stream.

📍 Facilities

It is a purely naturalistic area and therefore devoid of amenities.

🥾 Trail description

Return to the main trail, leaving the farmhouse on your left.

At this point, all you have to do is continue along the only main trail in the direction of Monti di Madri, passing from paved sections to others completely surrounded by nature with lovely spots along the stream where you can have a picnic.

After about 20 minutes you will arrive at Sass Corbée, where you can finish your route or continue exploring the less traveled areas of the area (for example, you could visit Barna, hamlet of Plesio, or Naggio, hamlet of Grandola ed Uniti).

CHILOMETRO DELLA CONOSCENZA
Lake Como

The Chilometro della Conoscenza (KM_C) is a pedestrian route that connects the parks of three beautiful Como villas (Villa Olmo, Villa del Grumello and Villa Sucota) through paths dotted with greenhouses, chapels, lemon houses and botanical rarities

The route is generally accessible from late March until early November, 9 am – 5 pm.

As can be guessed, the distance between the beginning and the end of the route, which runs entirely in the municipality of Como, is about 1 km (0.6 miles).

❗ This makes it suitable for a short break in the shade of trees and for those looking for a more private place than the usual tourist destinations. Being flat, the walk is suitable for everyone, although some sections, which can be avoided in some cases, may be problematic for wheelchairs (contact park operators for more information on this).

1. Chilometro della Conoscenza | Route through the villas

The path connects Villa Olmo, Villa del Grumello and Villa Sucota, through a route that offers scenic and artistic-monumental beauty.

✨ Highlights

Note: The three villas may be unvisitable or have limited access. Read on for more information.

1. Villa Olmo, a historic neoclassical villa with a wide park that includes an Italian-style garden at the front and an English-style garden at the back. The villa is currently under restoration and therefore may not be accessible, but its grounds are open according to established hours and it is a nice place to relax within walking distance of the city center.

2. Villa del Grumello, the villa located in the heart of the Chilometro della Conoscenza and active in organizing cultural and artistic events, creative workshops, private events and more. Also not to be missed are the adjacent properties, such as the dockyard, the charming chapel, the greenhouses, and the park as a whole.

3. Villa Sucota, home of the Fondazione Ratti, a foundation that aims to promote research and experimentation in art and culture, involving scholars and artists in a lively and open environment. Villa Sucota houses Antonio Ratti's collection of antique textiles with more than 30,000 artifacts from around the world and a library open to the public with more than 7,800 volumes specializing in art, textiles, fashion and applied arts. Learn more about visits on the foundation's website.

🥾 Trail description

The route begins at Villa Olmo, an imposing neoclassical villa not far from the center of the city of Como and surrounded by a large park.

From Villa Olmo, cross the Chilometro della Conoscenza bridge, which allows you to cross the carriageable Via per Cernobbio. After a short stretch of tree-lined path, stairs lead to the Grumello bridge, after which the path continues downhill to the right.

You pass by some old horse stables and after a few minutes you reach Villa del Grumello. Here there are many small tables where you can relax while looking at the view and enjoying one of the organic and zero-mile products that can be purchased at the villa's refreshment stand. The garden also hosts many events, which you can check out here.

Continuing along the path you will encounter other points of interest, such as the villa's dockyard, a charming newly restored chapel, and a beautiful cloister overlooking the lake.

The route ends in the park of Villa Sucota, with its greenhouses and lemon house. Note: this part of the route is open only on Sundays.

From here you can choose to return by retracing the same route or take the upper path, which is more immersed in nature.

2. Chilometro della Conoscenza | Path through nature (way back)

This part of the trail passes through the upper trail to the previous one. It is on a forest path, more naturalistic and offers beautiful views of Lake Como.

✨ Highlights

Villa del Grumello's greenhouse, one of the most secluded and picturesque places in the park. The structure, dating back to the mid-19th century, features a masonry building and the actual greenhouse, consisting of an iron and cast iron structure.

The greenhouse contains climbing plants of the genus ficus repens and a pool with water, a nod to Anglo-Saxon glass houses. Recent renovations have made this space available for creative workshops, art exhibitions and events, photo shoots, and much more.

After passing a beautiful viewpoint over Villa del Grumello, you will arrive at the villa's greenhouses, in one of the most secluded and atmospheric places in the park. The structure housing the greenhouses, which like the villa can host creative workshops and art events (among other things), overlooks a small and charming pond populated with fish.

After that, take the Grumello bridge again and head back in the direction of Villa Olmo, the point from which you started.

CASTLE OF VEZIO
Lake Como

If you are in the Bellagio or Varenna area during your vacation on Lake Como and feel like spending a couple of hours exploring the nature and history of the area, this is the walk for you.

In fact, with only a 30-minute walk from the center of Varenna, you can reach the top of the hill that houses the Castle of Vezio, a medieval fortress that has stood for more than a thousand years on the promontory overlooking Varenna. Note: the castle is open from March to the end of October. In other months, the castle is open on weekends when the weather is good.

❗ In addition to offering beautiful views of the central area of Lake Como, this walk (suitable for moderately trained people) allows visitors to discover the history of the area through the display of banners and artifacts inside the castle tower.

It doesn’t end there: the castle also houses special sculptures (plaster ghosts), some birds of prey, and a panoramic terrace where aperitifs are organized. Entertainment for everyone, including those visiting Lake Como with kids.

Learn all about the Castle of Vezio and follow my own steps with the GPS routes I recorded on the Komoot app (available for iOS and Android)!

1. From Varenna to the Castle of Vezio

A walk of about 30 minutes, easy but with some short uphill sections, that connects Piazza S. Giorgio (Varenna) to the Castle of Vezio via the Scabium trail, offering incredible views of Lake Como.

✨ Highlights

1. Church of San Giorgio, built in the 14th century in a style somewhere between Romanesque and Gothic. It houses numerous paintings from the late 15th and 16th centuries. As you look down, you can see the solid pavement, made entirely of traditional local black marble.

2. Villa Monastero. If you want, you can include in your itinerary a visit to Villa Monastero and be fascinated by its beautiful botanical garden.

3. Castle of Vezio, a medieval fortress that has stood for more than a thousand years on the promontory overlooking Varenna. Some quick information about the castle:

  • Full ticket costs €5, reduced €3 (for over 65s, groups of more than 12 people and kids aged 7 to 18)
  • From the castle garden, as well as from the top of its tower, there is a truly incredible view of the central area of Lake Como and its branches
  • The exhibit inside the museum collects important evidence of local history and of the Lariosaurus, the alleged monster of Lake Como
  • The complex also houses some birds of prey (once used for falconry) and the castle's "ghosts", white plaster sculptures made each year with the help of people who pose for an hour
  • Finally, on summer Friday and Saturday evenings (usually from early June to early September) the castle organizes aperitifs on the panoramic terrace at a cost of €35 per person.
📍 Facilities
Bars and restaurants

Piazza San Giorgio and the surrounding streets are filled with bistros, restaurants, bars, and ice cream parlors to suit all tastes and budgets.

You can also relax at the end of the tour at the castle bar where you can also buy souvenirs (including olive oil from the area).

The route, which already offers splendid views, proceeds on a paved road for a few minutes until the detour that leads to a large parking lot, from which the Scabium path actually starts.

The path is now completely immersed in nature, and proceeds for about 10 minutes with a medium-high gradient (20%). After another 5 minutes of slight ascent it reaches the entrance to the Castle of Vezio.

2. From the Castle of Vezio to the pier of Varenna

A short walk, ideal for heading back toward Varenna after visiting the castle. Unlike the other route, this path is mostly shaded. It does not give splendid views of the lake but allows you to discover Vezio, a hamlet of the village of Perledo.

✨ Highlights

1. Vezio, a hamlet in the municipality of Perledo that has a few dozen inhabitants and just as many charming stone houses. Characteristic is the atelier Le Ceramiche di Vezio, where fine ceramics made with the Japanese raku technique can be found.

2. Pier of Varenna, from which you can take the public boat service to all the main towns on the lake. Learn more about boat tours on Lake Como

STRADA REGIA
Lake Como

The Strada Regia is an ancient route of about 35 km (22 miles) that connects Como to the southern border of Bellagio, passing through towns on the right bank of the western branch of Lake Como (including Brunate, Torno and Nesso).

The route alternates between old mule tracks, forest paths and carriage road routes, and allows you to enjoy splendid views of Lake Como and discover small gems of the area far from the tourist clamor.

❗ The hike on the Strada Regia does not have any particular difficulties with the exception of a few stretches, particularly the steep ascent to the Monti di Careno in leg #3. It is easily walked at any time of year, avoiding the hottest days in summer and snow in winter.

The Strada Regia can be divided into several stages, and since it often crosses villages located directly on the lake, if you only have a few hours to spare, you can travel even a single stretch and then return to the starting point via bus or boat 😀

Strada Regia in 5 stages

1. Strada Regia | From Brunate to Torno

The first section is an easy route that can be done even in a morning. It starts from Brunate (which you can reach by the funicular from Como), goes through simple forest trails and mountain hamlets in the municipality of Blevio and then ends in Torno. From here you can proceed with the second section or return via bus or boat.

✨ Highlights

1. Como-Brunate funicolar.

2. The upper hamlets of Blevio: Capovico, Sopravilla, Sorto and Meggianico.

3. The village of Torno with its charming little square where you can take a café or have lunch with lake view.

📍 Facilities
Bars and restaurants

At the ends of this stretch are numerous bars and restaurants, both at the Como and Brunate funicular stations and in the village of Torno.

🥾 Trail description

From Como you can get to Brunate by funicular (watch out for queues in high season, which can last up to half an hour). Leaving the station, walk along Via Roma and after a short distance turn left into Via Nidirino. The paved road ends near the Nidirino sports center, and there, at the end of the soccer field on the right, the mule track to Capovico (hamlet of Blevio) begins.

The path descends narrowly into the woods and, after crossing two valleys, reaches a beautiful viewpoint over Cernobbio and Lake Como. At the next fork turn left, go around a group of farmsteads and continue to descend steeply toward Capovico.

Once in Capovico, turn right for the hamlet of Sopravilla and walk through the ancient alleys where it seems as if time has stood still. From Sopravilla enter Sorto and, past the Church of the Immaculata, cross the mule track that leads to Mezzovico.

Then, the trail goes through Meggianico and the steps leading to Cazzanore. Descend toward the lake after a short stretch of Strada Provinciale 583 (watch out for cars) and, before the tunnel, turn left toward the hamlet of Perlasca. At this point you will enter the municipality of Torno.

Arriving in Perlasca, go up via Rasina, and at the top of the cliff is the small Cappella del Tuè where there is a beautiful viewpoint over Torno, Moltrasio and the first basin of Lake Como, and immediately after the chapel the descent to the town center of Torno begins.

Here you will find the Church of San Giovanni where the Sacro Chiodo, one of the nails of the Passion of Christ, is preserved, and the Church of Santa Tecla where there are magnificent frescoes by Bartolomeo De Benzi.

You can also have coffee or lunch with a beautiful lake view in Piazza Giovio, the small square of Torno with its charming little harbor and public boat dock.

From Torno you can return to Como by ASF bus C30 (Como - Bellagio line) or by Navigazione Laghi boats.

2. Strada Regia | From Torno to Pognana

The stretch from Torno to Pognana offers beautiful naturalistic views (such as the Valle di Travaina in the upper part of Torno) and passes through some charming historic villages, such as Molina and Palanzo (both hamlets of Faggeto Lario), where time seems to stand still. From Pognana you can proceed with the third section or return via bus or boat.

1. Valle di Travaina, crossed by the Stravalle stream over which stands a beautiful stone bridge. Also in the valley is a remnant of a stone city gate (Porta di Travaina) that, in addition to being part of the ancient circuit surrounding the village, functioned as a duty collection point.

2. The upper hamlets of Faggeto Lario: Molina, Brema, Lemna and Palanzo. With a small detour you can also reach the famous Palanzo wine press, built in 1572 and used for pressing grapes and obtaining walnut oil.

3. Church of San Rocco and Church of Santissima Trinità in Pognana Lario.

📍 Facilities
Bars and restaurants

Bars and restaurants are mainly concentrated in Torno. Several bars and trattorias are also found in the hamlets of Molina and Palanzo. Finally, a couple of bars can be found in the historic center of Pognana. Note: do not always rely on the hours found on Google, as it is possible that especially in the off-season businesses may close earlier than expected.

🥾 Trail description

From Torno, head toward Via Pozzo where the Strada Regia sign is located. At the next fork, the route would then continue along Via per Molina, but I preferred to take the steeper Via per Piazzaga that leads to Valle di Travaina.

Through a forest path, this detour leads to a lovely valley, crossed by the Stravalle stream, which is reached by passing the remains of the Porta di Travaina, an ancient stone town gate that formed part of the entrance to the ancient village. A chapel and the stone bridge over the stream contribute to making this place unique to me.

In any case, both Via per Molina and the detour lead to Strada Provinciale 583. After a short stretch of carriage road, take the path to the right that climbs into the woods.

When you reach the ancient bridge over the Valle Pliniana, you enter the territory of Faggeto Lario. From the Chapel of San Rocco, climb toward Molina, a hamlet of Faggeto Lario and a small jewel in the hills of the Larian Triangle. Here you can have lunch at an osteria in the village square, but remember to check opening hours in advance if you plan to eat here.

The route leaves the hamlet along Via Fontana Vecchia, crosses the Valle dei Molini, and continues through the meadows of Brema, from which you can see the hamlet of Lemna. It then crosses the valley stream and, after crossing some cultivated terraces, meets the Chapel of Madonna del Rosario, which anticipates the entrance to the hamlet of Lemna.

After crossing the village to the Church of San Giorgio, the route continues on the paved road (via Bernardo Silo) and then on the provincial road until it reaches Palanzo.

A detour to the right takes you into the heart of the ancient village where you can visit the Church of Sant'Ambrogio and the famous Torchio, a big wine press made in 1572.

Leaving the village along Via Pisciola, descend toward Pognana Lario passing through a beautiful forest path. You will arrive at the Church of San Rocco thus entering the hamlet of Canzaga, and then reach the Church of Santissima Trinità located at the edge of the historic center of Pognana.

From here it is possible to reach Strada Provinciale 583 via the center of Pognana and return to the starting point by bus C30 (Como - Bellagio line) or by Navigazione Laghi boats.

3. Strada Regia | From Pognana to Nesso

This section is the wildest, as it takes place mostly on a forest path. Coming out of Pognana you face a particularly steep climb that leads to some old huts, so it is better to be a little bit trained. When you reach Nesso, with a view of its beautiful Orrido, you can proceed with the fourth section or return via bus or boat.

✨ Highlights

1. The town of Pognana Lario and its hamlets (Rovasco, Quarzano).

2. Monti di Careno, a group of stone cottages (in the municipality of Nesso) used in the past during periods of cattle transhumance.

3. The town of Nesso and its Orrido, the gorge shaped over the centuries by the incessant flow of water, which can be admired from Piazza Castello.

📍 Facilities
Bars and restaurants

In addition to the few bars and restaurants in Pognana, you can find several places to have a meal in the village of Nesso, especially around Piazza Castello.

🥾 Trail description

Cross Pognana Lario along Via Quarzano to the Church of San Miro in Rovasco, outside of which you can admire 13th-century frescoes in the Byzantine tradition. Continue along Via Careno to Quarzano, hamlet of Pognana Lario, where you will find a fork in the road.

The road to the right, the one I took, takes a path up through the woods to the Monti di Careno, stone cottages used in the past during periods of cattle transhumance. You will feel like you are a thousand light years away from the Lake Como you probably had in mind!

If you look at the map, you will notice that this is a particularly steep trail, with gradient peaks even around 35 percent. If you want to make less of an effort, at the Quarzano junction you can continue left on Via Careno until you reach the carriage road; from here, reach Careno (hamlet of Nesso) and climb back up to the Strada Regia from the road that starts from Meriggio (it is still steep, but it lasts a little less).

Go down Via dei Monti until you cross the mule track to Nesso. Pass the ruins of the ancient castle (unfortunately not open to visitors) and arrive at Piazza Castello, where you will enjoy a splendid view of the Orrido. Find out here how to get to the Nesso gorge viewpoint!

Around Piazza Castello you can find several bars where you can have a meal and also the stop of the C30 bus that can take you to Como or to Bellagio. If you go deeper into the village of Nesso you will also find the public boat dock.

4. Strada Regia | From Nesso to Lezzeno

This section passes through the upper hamlets of Nesso (including charming Vico) and reaches, after a route offering beautiful views of Lake Como, the hamlet of Carvagnana in Lezzeno. From here it is possible to continue with the last section or descend to the village and return via bus.

✨ Highlights

1. The old hamlets of Nesso, such as Lissogno and Vico

2. Church of Santa Maria (in the hamlet of Vico)

3. The beautiful views of the lake during the trail from Nesso to Lezzeno.

📍 Facilities
Bars and restaurants

In addition to the bars and ice cream parlors that are mainly concentrated in the village of Nesso, the Baita La Morena farmhouse is also located on this route, nestled in the woods. The hamlet of Carvagnana in Lezzeno has no bars or restaurants.

🥾 Trail description

Also this section allows you to choose two route variants starting from Piazza Castello in Nesso.

The variant for the well-trained, the one you find in this map, starts from the stairway from Piazza Castello and continues through the hamlets of Lissogno and Vico. After a nice stretch in the woods, the trail crosses the mule track that climbs from Via Borgonuovo (the other road).

Choosing the low variant, from Piazza Castello descend toward the lake until you reach the Ponte della Civera, from which there is a breathtaking view of the Nesso gorge. Then, walk along Via Coatesa and Via Borgovecchio to the Church of Santi Pietro e Paolo. Carefully transit Strada Provinciale 583 and, having reached a small chapel, turn right onto the path that climbs into the woods until you reach the high variant.

After passing a long, slightly uphill stretch, you will overlook Punta della Cavagnola, where the western end of the Monte San Primo ridge enters the waters of the lake. You thus enter the territory of Lezzeno, more specifically the hamlet of Carvagnana.

From here, you can cross the hamlet to reach the Strada Provinciale and take the C30 bus to Como or to Bellagio.

5. Strada Regia | From Lezzeno to Bellagio

Villa Pizzo is an elegant aristocratic house with a simple and geometric architecture.

The villa’s entire complex includes the main building and its annexes, greenhouses, the Volpi-Bassani family’s mausoleum and ten kilometers – 4+ miles – of boulevards and paths with Italian and English-style gardens containing a wide variety of exotic plants, hundreds of rose varieties, Japanese trees, orchids, seventeenth century staircases, statues and fountains.

The interiors of the Villa retain a majority of its neoclassical furnitures, thanks to Giovanni Battista Muggiasca (once bishop of Como).

Madame Musard (grand dame of the Second Empire) gave Villa Pizzo a feminine touch that still echoes in the villa’s exotic and sophisticated interiors containing handpainted ceiling frescoes depicting Pompeii-inspired stories, and pink and yellow hues which are still visible today.

An elegant funeral vase monument with the symbol of the electric battery dedicated to Alessandro Volta stands on the villa’s grounds.

The villa contains two docks – the old dock on the west of the villa and the new grand dock, built by the Volpi-Bassani family, on the east of the villa. The Darsena terrace is a picture-perfect and romantic location for wedding ceremonies and photoshoot campaigns.

HISTORY of Villa Pizzo

Monument dedicated to Alessandro Volta at Villa Pizzo
Monument dedicated to Alessandro Volta at Villa Pizzo

Giovanni Muggiasca, merchant of Como, purchased the land between Cernobbio’s and Moltrasio’s borders in 1435 and built Villa Pizzo. In 1629, during the plague, the Muggiasca family took refuge in Villa Pizzo along with many others from nearby towns who gave structure to the villa and its gardens.

The villa housed many guests including Alessandro Volta – famous scientist who invented the electric battery.

Giovanni Battista Mugiasca, the last Mugiasca heir, bequeathed the villa to Sant’Anna Hospital when he died in 1842.

Later, Archduke Rainer of Austria became the villa’s owner and set the final layout for the English and Italian gardens with the help of Villoresi – a famous landscape architect. In 1848, the Viceroy left the villa.

In 1865, Madame Musard acquired the villa, re-decorated its interiors and also added touches of pink and yellow colors to the villa.

Since 1871, the Volpi-Bassani family own the villa. They built the family mausoleum and the new grand dock on the east of the villa.

LECCO
Lake Como

Lecco is a city located on the southeastern branch of Lake Como, between the pristine waters of the lake and the scenic Orobian Pre-Alps.

Once a medieval hamlet, its historic town center contains well-preserved nineteenth-century and neoclassical style architectures including Palazzo delle Paure. The city commonly referred as ‘that branch of Lake Como‘  is famous for its various ‘Manzonian locations‘ mentioned in the renowned Italian historical novel – The Betrothed by Alessandro Manzoni.

Strolling through the lakeside promenade lined with stately trees, one can’t help but admire Lecco’s breathtaking landscape.

Lecco can be reached by a train route from Milan that also passes through some other famous towns (Varenna, Colico, etc.,) on the east of the lake. There are buses which connect Como and Lecco and summertime public boat services between Bellagio, Varenna and Lecco.

THE TOWN CENTER
Between culture and traces of the Middle Ages

Piazza Cermenati - Lecco's town center
Piazza Cermenati, Lecco

Lecco’s historic town centre and its important landmarks can be visited by an easy and pleasant walk between its two main connecting squaresPiazza Mario Cermenati and Piazza XX Settembre.

Due to its flat terrain, it is easily accessible even for people with special needs.

Piazza Cermenati overlooks Lake Como and contains a dedicated monument to Mario Cermenati after whom the square is named. Behind Piazza Cermenati is the Basilica of San Nicolò (Saint Nicholas), the patron saint of Lecco, sailors and boatmen.

The notable feature of this basilica is its 96 metre neo-gothic bell tower also called as the ‘Matitone’ (big pencil) because of its characteristic shape. Its height is on par with London’s Big Ben.

📷 Walking along Piazza Cermenati will lead you to Piazza XX Settembre which is the heart of Lecco’s town center. This picture-perfect square is enclosed by both modern and neoclassical buildings, restaurants and cafeterias – where charming past meets the modern present.

Located in Piazza XX Settembre is Palazzo delle Paure (Palace of Fears). The palace which once collected taxes now hosts local and international contemporary art, photography and graphics and it is open to the public.

Another medieval gem to discover in Piazza XX Settembre is Torre Viscontea (Visconti Tower). This tower is the only visible remains of a fourteenth-century castle of Lecco, built by Azzone Visconti, who wanted Lecco to be a fortified village. Today, both Torre Visconti and Palazzo delle Paure belong to the Civic Museum of Lecco.

LAKESIDE PROMENADE
Walk through the trees with mountain and lake views

The pristine waters of the southern most part of the eastern branch of Lake Como can be enjoyed along Lecco’s lakeside promenade – one of the longest promenades of Lake Como. It is lined with majestic trees and benches for leisure.

Walking along the promenade you can view the Lecco port, the scenic Alpine range of Orobie and Lecco’s side of the Larian Triangle. This triangle is formed by Como to the southwest, Lecco to the southeast and Bellagio to the north of both Como and Lecco.

From the lakefront, you can also catch glimpses of historical buildings in Lecco’s town centre that extends parallel to the lake.

One of the most notable features that you can notice as you walk along the lakefront is the golden statue of Saint Nicholas located in the Punta Maddalena area on the lake. He is the patron saint of Lecco and the progenitor of the world-famous Santa Claus.

Palazzo delle Paure (Palace of fears) is a palace in Lecco’s town centre in Piazza XX Settembre overlooking Lake Como and Piazza Cermenati. This nineteenth century, neo-medieval eclectic style palace was built on a part of the fortified village’s old town wall.

It served as the customs house until 1964 where Lecco’s citizens came to pay their taxes and hence its peculiar name. On the tower is the Visconti family’s marble coat of arms representing a snake with a child.

This four-floor building now hosts temporary art exhibitions and it is open to visitors (tap here for opening times and entrance ticket fees details). The palace has a dedicated contemporary art section and a photography and graphics section.

The contemporary art section displays the works of the most important local artists such as Gasparini, Vitali, Stefanoni, Secomandi, Chiappori and some of the greatest Italian artists such as Baj, Cavaliere, Castellani, Pomodoro, Rotella and Scanavino.

MANZONIAN PLACES
On the steps of the author of "The Betrothed"

Alessandro Manzoni is famous for his literary masterpiece – The Betrothed, set in and around Lecco – “that branch of Lake Como” made so famous by him and hence his name is synonymous with Lecco.

Pescarenico

Pescarenico, the only place directly mentioned in The Betrothed, is a fisherman’s village on the shores of River Adda. This colorful village with narrow streets and restaurants can be reached by crossing the Azzoni Visconti Bridge and the Viscontea Island.

Villa Manzoni & Museo Manzoniano

Villa Manzoni, a neoclassical building near downtown Lecco, was young Manzoni’s summer residence. The Manzonian Museum contains original furnishings and Manzoni’s works. You can visit the museum and the civic art gallery with a unique ticket (tap here for details).

Castello dell'Innominato

Castello dell’Innominato

Castello dell’Innominato, a fourteenth-century hilltop castle in Vercurago, was the residence of Innominato (the Unnamed) in The Betrothed. You can reach the castle by train or bus from Lecco followed by a short hike and enjoy 360° panoramic views. Good hiking shoes are recommended.

LAKE COMO WITH KIDS
the best things to do

Lake Como is a beautiful destination in Italy that is not just for adults but also a perfect spot for families with kids. With its natural beauty, historical villas, and exciting activities, Lake Como offers a wide range of options for parents and children alike.

Families can enjoy the stunning scenery of the lake, the beautiful parks and gardens, and explore the historical sites and museums. Moreover, there are adventure parks, animal farms, and unique family games that can keep kids entertained. With its diverse offerings, Lake Como is a great place to make unforgettable family memories.

Are you ready?? Discover the best things to do in Lake Como with kids!

1. Visit Vezio Castle in Varenna and its scary dungeons!

A visit to the Castello di Vezio in Varenna is an ideal activity for families with children visiting Lake Como. This historic castle offers visitors an overview of the region’s rich cultural heritage, while providing opportunities to experience unique and exciting activities that children will enjoy.

First, the castle also houses a museum that displays medieval weapons and armor, offering children a fascinating glimpse into the past. Even I was amazed as I observed the typical armor used by soldiers during the Middle Ages and the centuries that led to the development of Varenna and its surroundings!

Climbing to the top of the castle, the view is unique. In fact, through its spires, there is a breathtaking view of Lake Como and the surrounding mountains.

But probably most interesting for children are the castle’s dungeons, which were once used to protect the army and population from enemy attacks. A long staircase leads deep into the heart of the mountain, and once you reach the floor, several large rooms open up containing skeleton dummies and other figures that, accomplice to a background of eerie screams and laughter, can be downright creepy!

After exploring the castle, take a walk through the charming town of Varenna. The town offers many picturesque streets and alleys to stroll through, as well as a beautiful waterfront. You can stop for ice cream or coffee at one of the town’s many cafes or restaurants.

2. Spend the day at an adventure park

For families seeking an adrenaline-filled adventure, Lake Como offers two fantastic options: Lake Como Adventure Park in Gravedona and Jungle Raider Park in Civenna, hamlet of Bellagio. These adventure parks are ideal for families with kids who love the outdoors and physical activity.

At Lake Como Adventure Park, visitors can choose from a variety of exciting activities such as zip-lining, tree-climbing, and rope courses. The park features courses designed for different ages and skill levels, ensuring that everyone can find a challenge that suits them.

Jungle Raider Park offers similar attractions, including tree-top obstacle courses and ziplines that wind through the forest.

Both adventure parks provide a unique opportunity for families to bond while experiencing the thrill of outdoor adventure. The courses are designed to promote teamwork and cooperation, making it an ideal activity for families with children of different ages.

3. Enjoy nature and its flavors

Lake Como offers families an abundance of natural beauty and opportunities to explore the great outdoors.

For a half-day excursion, families can visit the idyllic farmhouse Le Radici in Blessagno (Val d’Intelvi). Here, visitors can enjoy local specialties and meet the farm’s many animals, including goats, yaks, chickens, and their most entertaining guests: llamas, with whom you can take a nice, and… fluffy walk!

Another great option for a nature excursion is Val Sanagra, located near Menaggio. The area offers beautiful hiking trails that wind through forests, along rivers, and past stunning waterfalls. Families can also visit Agriturismo La Vecchia Chioderia, a picturesque farmhouse that offers a peaceful retreat in the heart of the valley.

For a more challenging hike, families can head to the farmhouse Al Marnich in Schignano. This is the starting point for the Sentiero delle Espressioni, or Trail of Expressions. The trail features sculptures and installations by local artists that explore themes related to the environment and human emotion.

4. Enjoy a family game in a unique setting

Families visiting Lake Como with kids can enjoy a range of fun activities and games together, and one great option is miniature golf.

Menaggio’s miniature golf course is a perfect example of a family game in a unique setting. The course offers a fun and engaging experience for kids and adults alike, with obstacles and challenges that make each hole exciting and unique.

Miniature golf is a great way to spend quality time together as a family, promoting teamwork and friendly competition. It’s also a chance for families to enjoy the beautiful views and fresh air of Lake Como in a relaxed and fun atmosphere.

With its scenic surroundings and playful challenges, Menaggio’s miniature golf course is sure to be a hit with kids and adults of all ages.

Are you visiting Lake Como for a family reunion?
Consider renting a bus to get around the area

Bus charter Milano

If you are visiting Lake Como with a large group, renting a bus can be a convenient and cost-effective option. It allows families with kids to explore the area together, without worrying about driving or parking.

Additionally, it is a great way to keep everyone together and ensure that no one gets lost.

One of the best options for transportation to Lake Como is a Bus Charter to Milan. Milan is one of the major cities in Northern Italy and is well-connected to other parts of the region, including Lake Como. Bus rental Milan offers a convenient and affordable way to transport large groups of people, making it an ideal option for family reunions.

The buses are comfortable and equipped with amenities such as air conditioning, restrooms, and Wi-Fi, making the journey to Lake Como comfortable and enjoyable. Additionally, bus charter Milan allows for flexibility in terms of pick-up and drop-off locations, providing a customized experience for your family reunion.
