The Volta tour can be concluded with a visit to the Faro Voltiano, situated in the neighborhood of San Maurizio in Brunate. Its location allows it to dominate the city of Como and the surrounding areas. The lighthouse, like the Volta temple, was built in 1927 to commemorate the first centenary of the scientist’s death.
Designed by Gabriele Giussani, the lighthouse is 29 meters high and emits an alternating rotating green, white, and red light, which is visible from 50 km away. Recently, the light system has been replaced by a modern led system, one of the fewest in the world.
The peculiarity of the structure is its unusual location, since it’s not on the lake shore, but on top of a hill, in order to celebrate the grandeur of Alessandro Volta.
